Posture Tips

For my right hand, I often use a 3-finger assignment for fingerpicking:

  • With a 3-finger assignment, the thumb is assigned to the G & C strings while the index and middle fingers are assigned to E & A, respectively.
  • With the 4-finger assignment, the thumb, index, middle, and ring fingers are assigned to the G, C, E, and A strings. I rarely use this method because my ring finger lacks the dexterity and control for playing melodies on the A string.

For my left hand, the most important technique is sustain.

  • For nearly every chord, I position my fingers in a way that allow me to hold the chord as long as possible. This allows the harmony to resonate better and it allows me to create embellishments based on the chord.
